Championship Weekend

The biggest weekend of the fall season is upon us - Championship Weekend. To the winner goes the spoils ... the championship trophy and a trip to the NCAA championship tournament. To the losers, it's wait-and-see if an at-large invitation is forthcoming to the NCAAs. It's high drama on the Centennial's biggest stage!

Field Hockey
Can Ursinus make it seven titles in a row? Or is this the year that Johns Hopkins, Haverford and Washington College will break the streak? The tournament takes place in Collegeville for the eighth straight season and everyone is chasing the third-ranked Bears. Ursinus (16-1) takes on the Shorewomen (9-9) in the first semifinal, while the Blue Jays (11-6) and the Fords (12-4) meet in the nightcap. UC is 12-1 in its eight CC tournament appearances with 12 straight wins since a 1-0 loss to Hopkins in the 2003 semifinals. Washington is winless in four trips to the semis. The Jays are making their 10th trip to the CC tourney and are 8-1 in semifinal contests and 11-7 overall. Haverford is making its second straight trip to the semis, looking for its first-ever appearance in the final. Championship website

Soccer (W)
The Johns Hopkins Class of 2011 looks to join the JHU classes of 2009 and 2010 in winning Centennial championships in all four seasons. The Blue Jays have won five straight crowns and take on Haverford in the semifinals in Carlisle. Top-seeded Dickinson plays host to Ursinus in the opener. The Red Devils (14-2-1) have won all four tournament games prior to the final in their history, but are 0-3 in title matches. Ursinus looks to get back to the final for the first time since 2005. The Bears (10-6-1) are dangerous historically in penalty kicks, winning all three matches decided by PKs. Hopkins (15-3) has a 14-3 CC tourney record, including an 8-1 mark in semifinals. Haverford (12-5) has yet to win a tournament match in five outings. Championship website

Soccer (M)
For the longest time, Centennial titles in even-numbered years belonged to Johns Hopkins. The Jays won CC championships in 1996-98-00-02-04-06, but were denied in 2008 by Swarthmore. It is the showcase match of Saturday's semifinals at Clothier Field, as the top-seeded Garnet takes on Hopkins ... which won the '09 title. Swat (14-1-2) is 2-4 all-time in the tourney, while JHU (13-3-3) is 13-4, including a 7-1 mark in semis. The opener pits Franklin & Marshall and Muhlenberg. The Mules (10-1-6) have won two Centennial titles, but have not been to the final since 2005, and have a 4-7 mark all-time in the tourney. The Diplomats (9-3-3) are 2-4 all-time and look for a trip to the title match for the first time since 2006. Championship website

Volleyball
The road to the Centennial championship goes through Haverford, as the four-time defending Conference titlists welcome Hopkins, F&M and Swarthmore to the Main Line. The Fords (18-12) are riding an eight-match CC tourney win streak and meet the Garnet (18-10) in Saturday's opening semifinal. Swarthmore, fresh off its second straight first-round win, looks to advance to its first-ever Centennial final. The nightcap pits the Blue Jays (19-11) and the Diplomats (20-6) in the sixth-ever playoff meeting between the teams. F&M holds a 4-1 playoff advantage and a 21-12 all-time lead, but Hopkins won the regular-season clash in straight sets. The Jays look to return to the final for the first time since 2004, while the Diplomats have not been to the title match since 2006. Championship website

Five-Star Matchups

It's Tournament Time! Today's the day that most folks describe as the "play-in" game. They would be mistaken. Today is the first-round game and I would venture to guess that most of the athletes playing in the matches would agree. So nomenclature aside, here is what to watch for on First-Round Wednesday. Can't make it to a site ... watch LIVE via streaming video! Or get up-to-the-minute updates via Twitter.

Washington College at Gettysburg (Field Hockey)
The Shorewomen (8-9) travel to the Battlefield to take on the Bullets (9-8) in a first-round game for the right to move into the semifinals opposite top-seeded Ursinus on Saturday. Washington won the regular-season meeting on Oct. 16 by a 3-1 count, defeating the Orange and Blue for the first time since 2003. GK Shannon Davis made a career-high 12 saves, while D Brittany Palasik scored a goal and set a Conference record with her 15th defensive save of the season. The Shorewomen, who trail in the overall series, 14-5, have not won at Gettysburg since the 2000 season. Emily Trees (9-4-22) and Gussie Reilly (8-7-23) make a potent 1-2 combo for Washington, while the Bullets look to Sarah Cole (7-3-17) who also has three game-winning goals on the season. Watch LIVE.

Ursinus at Gettysburg (Women's Soccer)
The Battlefield is the place to be on Wednesday with two first-round Conference playoff games. The nightcap pits the Bears (10-6) and the Bullets (12-6) in a rematch of the Oct. 2 match won by Gettysburg, 1-0. Freshman Rachel West scored the match's lone goal in the 62nd minute and GK Allie Rivera made it stand up, making two saves for the shutout. The Orange and Blue is 11-3-3 overall in the series, but the teams have split their two playoff meetings - 2004 (Gettysburg, 1-0) and 2005 (Ursinus, 1-1, 2-0). Ursinus looks to Jess Porcelan (7-3-17) on offense, while the Bullets are led by Casey Attanasio (8-4-20). Watch LIVE.

Gettysburg at Johns Hopkins (Men's Soccer)
The Bullets (5-9-2) and the Blue Jays (12-3-3) meet for the 76th time in their long-standing series and the seventh time in Centennial playoff action. Hopkins holds a 45-21-9 series lead, after a 1-0 victory on Oct. 27 on a goal by Scott Bukoski. JHU outshot Gettysburg, 23-10, in that contest. Gettysburg's last playoff triumph was in 2005, downing the Jays in penalties. Eric Hynes leads the Bullets in scoring (5-1-11) and has three game-winning goals. Sean Coleman leads Hopkins with 10 goals and an assist for 21 points. Watch LIVE.

Gettysburg at Swarthmore (Volleyball)
The Bullets (16-13) and the Garnet (17-10) square off for the right to take on top-seeded Haverford in the semifinals this weekend on the Main Line. Gettysburg is one of the perennial powers in the Conference with seven titles and 13 appearances in 13 years of the Conference tournament. Swarthmore makes its third trip to the Centennial playoffs. The Garnet won its first-ever match against the Bullets in 29 tries back on Oct. 23, winning in straight sets, as Kathryn Montemurro had 15 kills. Montemurro is second in the CC in hitting percentage (.315), while Gettysburg's Nicole Burns is third at .312. Watch LIVE.

Five-Star Matchups

Here it is - the first of two fall Championship Weekends. We kick things off Saturday with the annual Cross Country championship, hosted by Johns Hopkins in Elkridge, Md. Then we turn our focus to the final day of the regular season in field hockey, soccer and volleyball. One final four site is up for grabs, while spots in three of the four sports are still available with one game remaining. Sets the stage for a great weekend ... follow the latest news by following us on Twitter. Our feed also posts directly to the Conference website home page.

Ursinus at Johns Hopkins (Women's Soccer), Friday, 7 p.m.
The Bears (6-3, 10-5) need a win over the 13th ranked Blue Jays (7-2, 14-3) to clinch a playoff berth. Simple really, just beat Hopkins for the first time ever (0-13-2), while also defeating your first-ever ranked opponent. That said, Ursinus is one of the hottest teams in the Conference, riding a six-match win streak.

Dickinson at Franklin & Marshall (Men's Soccer), Friday, 7:30 p.m.
There are seven teams battling for four playoff berths with one game remaining, so each weekend match takes on a playoff atmosphere. The Red Devils (4-2-2, 10-3-3) and the Diplomats (4-1-3, 8-3-3) meet for the 60th time in their long-running series (1931) with F&M holding a 33-19-7 advantage. Dickinson is 3-0-2 in the last five contests since a 2-1 Diplomat win at home in 2005. That was the last year that the Blue and White scored a goal against the Devils. Winner is in the tournament. Watch LIVE.

Swarthmore at Franklin & Marshall (Volleyball), 12 p.m.
Although both teams are in the five-team postseason field, the winner of the match secures a first-round bye for the tourney. The Diplomats (7-2, 19-6) hold a 33-4 all-time advantage in the series against the Garnet (7-2, 17-9), including 21 straight matches. Swarthmore's last victory came in 1989.

Muhlenberg at Gettysburg (Women's Soccer), 1 p.m.
This match looks and feels like a first-round playoff match, as the winner is in the field, while the loser is most likely out. The Bullets (6-3, 11-6) lead the all-time series, 12-7-2, but the Mules (6-3, 7-7-2) are 3-0-1 in the last four. Watch LIVE.

Dickinson at Washington (Field Hockey), 1 p.m.
The Shorewomen (5-4, 7-9) can clinch the last remaining playoff berth with a win at home against the Red Devils (2-7, 3-13). A Washington loss opens the door for McDaniel (4-5, 7-9) to take the final spot with a win at Haverford (7-2, 12-4). Dickinson has not won in Chestertown since 1995 - a streak of seven games.

Ursinus at Johns Hopkins (Field Hockey), 5 p.m.
The last remaining final four site is up for grabs Saturday evening in Baltimore as the third-ranked Bears (9-0 CC, 15-1) visit the Blue Jays (8-1, 11-5). The winner hosts the final four next weekend ... pretty simple. Ursinus is 13-1 all-time against Hopkins, but that one time was memorable, as JHU knocked off the Bears in Collegeville in the 2003 CC semifinals. Ursinus has won 34 consecutive Centennial regular-season games since a 3-2 loss at F&M on Oct. 6, 2007.

Haverford at Swarthmore (Men's Soccer), 7 p.m.
At kick-off, we'll know the playoff situation. The Garnet (6-0-2, 13-1-2) already know its fate and will host the final four next weekend. The Fords (4-3-1, 8-5-2) need a victory to have a chance for its first-ever CC tourney appearance ... a tie will leave Haverford on the outside looking in. This match is one of the oldest rivalries in all of collegiate soccer, meeting for the 88th time since 1921. Swarthmore has won six in a row to narrow its series deficit to 43-36-8. The Fords' last win along Crum Creek - 2002 (1-0). Watch LIVE.

Five-Star Matchups

If you could be in two places at one time ... tonight would be a great night to be at Varsity Field in Allentown and Tarble Pavilion in Swarthmore. The top two teams in men's soccer and volleyball square off tonight in these locales with first place and the top seed for the upcoming playoff tournaments on the line.

Swarthmore at Muhlenberg (Men's Soccer)
"It's the biggest game of my career, the biggest game of every senior's career." - Eric Williams, Muhlenberg (pictured in grey)

How big is this game ... the last time two unbeaten Conference teams met this late in the season was in 1998 when Johns Hopkins (7-0) defeated Gettysburg (7-0), 2-0, at Homewood. The #19th ranked Mules (4-0-3, 9-0-6) are one of two unbeaten teams (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) in Division III, while the ninth-ranked Garnet (12-1-2, 5-0-2) can secure the top seed and home field advantage for next weekend's final four with a victory. Muhlenberg holds a 28-24-3 series lead and has a win and a tie in its last two trips to Clothier Field. Two of the top candidates for CC Player of the Year will be on display in the Mules' Cody Antonini (15-4-34) and Swarthmore's Morgan Langley (11-13-35). Antonini leads the Centennial and is third in Division III in goals, while Langley leads the Conference and is sixth nationally in points. 'Berg has a school record 15-game unbeaten streak. Watch LIVE.

Haverford at Swarthmore (Volleyball)
Do you prefer volleyball to soccer ... then we have a match for you! The four-time defending Centennial champion Fords (8-0, 15-12) can lock up the top seed for next weekend's Conference tournament with a victory over the Garnet (7-1, 17-8). A Swat victory, combined with a triumph at F&M on Friday night, would give the Garnet the top seed and homecourt next Saturday. The Fords have won seven straight in the series to take a 20-7 lead since the inception of the CC in 1993. Swarthmore's last triumph was a four-set win at home in 2003. The stars will be out in force tonight at Tarble, as Haverford's Kelsey Cantwell is third in the Conference in kills (3.08), while the Garnet's Genny Pezzola is sixth (2.99). The Fords' Kate Comey leads all CC setters in assists (9.85), while Swat's Brone Lobichusky is among the Conference leaders in blocks (0.75). Watch LIVE.

Johns Hopkins at Gettysburg (Men's Soccer)
Not to be lost in the lights of the showdown at Swarthmore is the critical match between the Blue Jays (3-2-2, 10-3-3) and the Bullets (3-2-2, 4-8-2) at the Battlefield. It was 12 years ago when the squads battled for the Centennial championship as Conference unbeatens. Tonight, they meet as two teams tied for the fifth and final playoff spot, looking for three points to solidify their tournament hopes. This is the 75th meeting between the schools with Hopkins holding a 44-21-9 advantage. Gettysburg has captured the last two regular season matches, but JHU won the 2008 semifinal contest at Swarthmore. Hopkins' Sean Coleman (9-1-19) trails only Swarthmore's Morgan Langley (11-13-35) and Muhlenberg's Cody Antonini (15-4-34) in the Conference scoring chase. Watch out for Gettysburg's Eric Hynes. Two of his three goals in CC play have been game-winners. Watch LIVE.

Johns Hopkins at McDaniel (Field Hockey)
The Blue Jays (7-1 CC, 10-5) and the Green Terror (4-4, 7-8) meet in a game that has critical implications for both teams' playoff hopes. Hopkins needs a win to keep its hopes alive for the top seed and homefield for next weekend's final four. McDaniel is tied with Washington College for the fifth and final playoff spot and needs a win to improve its chances of making the field. It is the 36th meeting between the long-time rivals with JHU holding a 23-10-2 lead, including wins in the last five encounters. The Terror's last triumph was a 4-0 blanking of the Blue Jays at home in 2005. Hopkins' Carly Bianco (11-5-27) is one of seven CC players with 10+ goals, while McDaniel's Sarah Meszler has three game-winning goals among her seven on the season.

Five-Star Matchups

Washington at Haverford (Field Hockey)
Two teams in the hunt for a Conference playoff spot could determine if one gets a first-round bye today on the Main Line. The Shorewomen (4-2 CC, 6-7) and the Fords (4-2, 9-4) are tied for third place in the Conference and have a half-game lead over Gettysburg (6-8, 4-3). Haverford has won four straight in the series to close the all-time deficit to 11-5-1. The Fords are second in the Conference in scoring offense (4.69), while Washington is third in scoring defense (1.87). Haverford's Alex Waleko is second among Centennial players in scoring (15-9-39), while the Shorewomen's Shannon Davis is third in save percentage (73.7).

Swarthmore at Ursinus (Women's Soccer)
A vital game for both teams takes place in Collegeville this afternoon as the Garnet (5-1, 7-4-2) takes on the Bears (4-3, 7-5). Swarthmore is tied for first place in the Conference with Dickinson and holds the tie-breaker advantage on the Red Devils. Ursinus is currently seventh in the CC and may need three points to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Garnet is 3-0-1 vs. the Bears in the last four meetings, but UC holds a 9-5-1 all-time series lead. Swarthmore's Megan Colombo is tied for the Centennial scoring lead (9-2-20), while Jess Porcelan leads Ursinus with 6-3-15.

Five-Star Matchups

Haverford at Johns Hopkins (Field Hockey)
The Fords (2-1 CC, 6-2) and the Blue Jays (2-1, 4-4) meet in a game that could have playoff implications down the line. Hopkins leads the all-time series, 25-4-1, and has won all 15 previous contests at Homewood Field. Haverford broke a 10-game losing streak to JHU last season, winning 3-2 on Swan Field. The Fords' Alex Waleko is sixth in the country in goals (1.57) and points (3.71) per game. Carly Bianco leads the Jays with five goals.

Muhlenberg at Johns Hopkins (Men's Soccer)
A battle of nationally-ranked clubs takes place under the lights at Homewood Field as the Mules (1-0-2, 5-0-3) take on the Blue Jays (1-1-1, 7-2-2). Muhlenberg, ranked 19th by D3soccer.com and 22nd by the NSCAA, is looking for its first win in the Charm City since the series' first meeting in 1946 (4-2). Hopkins, ranked 13th and 25th, respectively, holds a 14-10-2 series lead. 'Berg junior Cody Antonini leads the Conference with 11 goals and 25 points. JHU goalkeeper Ravi Gill has a CC-leading 0.,57 goals-against average.

Ursinus at Gettysburg (Women's Soccer)
The Bears (2-1, 5-3) and the Bullets (2-1, 6-3) meet for the 17th time since 1996 with Gettysburg holding a 10-3-3 series lead. Ursinus is 3-1-2 in its last six matches with the Bullets. Jess Porcelan of the Bears shares the Conference lead with six goals and GK Kara DiJoseph has the Centennial-best 87.2 save percentage. Gettysburg has a balanced scoring attack, led by Rachel West with 4-4-12.

Haverford at Johns Hopkins (Volleyball)
Two of the three unbeaten teams in Conference play meet in Baltimore with their share of first place on the line. The Fords (2-0, 8-9) are battle-tested with four of their losses coming at the hands of top-20 teams, including three against Nos. 1 and 2. Laura Ramos is fourth in the Conference in kills at 3.02 per set. JHU's Melissa Cole leads the Centennial in that category at 3.28 per set. Hopkins (3-0, 10-9) is 16-9 all-time against Haverford but has dropped five straight since a 2005 win in five sets on the Main Line.

Championship Weekend

It's the weekend that Centennial fall athletes have been working for all season ... championship weekend. We'll be in Allentown (soccer), Collegeville (field hockey) and Haverford (volleyball) all weekend to bring you all the updates from what promises to be an exciting climax to the Conference season.

Men's Soccer at Muhlenberg
Semifinals (Friday, 4:00)

#15 Johns Hopkins vs. #7 Swarthmore
Dickinson vs. #18 Muhlenberg.
Final (Saturday, 7:00).
The men's soccer championship kicks off the weekend on Friday afternoon and the four remaining teams may provide the most competitive tournament in Division III. Muhlenberg, Swarthmore, Johns Hopkins and Dickinson have a combined record of 51-10-8 and have all received votes in the national poll this season. Close games have been a hallmark of the CC playoffs of late: Of the 12 games played since 2005, seven were decided by one goal (four in overtime), and four went to penalty kicks. Muhlenberg is the fifth different school to host the CC men’s soccer tournament in the last five years. The top seed has won the title five of eight times, including Muhlenberg when it last hosted in 2003 and Swarthmore last year. Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg are the only schools who have participated in all eight CC tournaments, with the Blue Jays advancing to the final six times. Hopkins has won a league-high seven championships, two more than Muhlenberg. The Blue Jays are 10-4 all-time in CC tourney play, including a 6-1 mark in the semifinals. Swarthmore, the defending champ, is 1-3 in the round, while Muhlenberg is 2-4. Dickinson lost its only semifinal appearance last season. Cody Antonini, Muhlenberg (pictured)

Field Hockey at Ursinus
Semifinals (Saturday, 11:00)

Haverford vs. #3 Ursinus
#14 Gettysburg vs. #17 Johns Hopkins.
Final (Sunday, 1:00).
The championship tournament returns to the Eleanor Frost Snell Alumnae Field for the seventh straight year with the host Bears (16-2) looking for a sixth title in a row. Ursinus is ranked third nationally and has outscored its Centennial opposition, 85-7, this season. The Bears defeated Haverford (9-9), 8-1, back on Oct. 13 and also defeated Gettysburg (6-1) and Johns Hopkins (8-3) during the regular season. The Blue Jays edged the Bullets in penalty strokes on Sept. 19. Ursinus is 5-1 in semifinal matches, while Haverford is making its inaugural appearance in the CC final four. Hopkins (7-1) and Gettysburg (3-2) have made multiple appearances in the semis but have only met each other once before in the round - last season, a 2-0 JHU victory. Alyssa Thren, Ursinus (pictured)

Women's Soccer at Muhlenberg
Semifinals (Saturday, 1:00)

Dickinson vs. Muhlenberg
#10 Johns Hopkins vs. Haverford.
Final (Sunday, 2:00).
The women's tournament continues on Saturday with a Sunday final with four teams that combined for a 52-13-4 record. The top seed took advantage of playing on its home field in six of the first eight tournaments, including Muhlenberg in 2001 and 2003. Last year, all four tournament games were decided by one goal or went into penalty kicks. Johns Hopkins has won four consecutive CC crowns (seven overall) and a 12-3 all-time in the Centennial tournament, including a 7-1 mark in the semifinals. Haverford, the 1995 champion, has not won a CC tournament game in three tries, including two semifinal trips. Muhlenberg has won three championships, while Dickinson is 3-2 overall in the tourney and is 2-0 in the semifinals, but winless in the final. Jenn Paulucci, Johns Hopkins (pictured)

Volleyball at Haverford
Semifinals (Saturday, 1:00)

Swarthmore vs. #25 Haverford
Franklin & Marshall vs. Gettysburg.
Final (Sunday, 1:00).
The Class of 2010 at Haverford goes for four in a row as the Centennial volleyball tourney continues Saturday at Gooding Arena. The #25 Fords went 10-0 in the Conference this season, dropping only three sets in CC play. Haverford had dropped six straight semifinal games before beginning their winning three-year run in 2006. Franklin & Marshall is making its 10th appearance in the tourney and looks for its fourth Centennial championship and first since 2000. Gettysburg is the winningest program in the Centennial with 11 titles to its credit. The Bullets' last title came in 2005. F&M and Gettysburg are used to meeting in the final (four times), but have only met in the semis once (2008). Swarthmore is making its first trip to the CC final four. Five-Star Matchups

Welcome to our Five-Star Matchups for a 1st round Wednesday. The winners of today's matches get the privilege of moving on to face the top seed on its home field on the weekend. The losers will most likely pack up the gear for the year.

Franklin & Marshall at Dickinson (Men's Soccer)
110 minutes of soccer did not determine a winner between these two in Saturday's regular-season finale, so they'll meet again today ... and someone will advance. The Red Devils (12-3-2) and the Diplomats (9-5-3) have met 59 times previously on the pitch - but never in the Centennial playoffs - with F&M holding a 33-18-7 advantage. But the series has been tight since 1993, tied at 7-7-4. The Diplomats are 0-2-1 in Carlisle since their last win in 2004 (4-0). Dickinson is led by the 1-2 combination of Tom Parkinson and Nicolas Tierno, who each have scored 10 goals. F&M looks to Matt Melino who leads the team in scoring with 4-6-14.

Franklin & Marshall at Haverford (Field Hockey)
The Diplomats (10-7) and the Fords (8-9) will meet in the Conference playoffs for the first time tonight under the lights at Swan Field. Haverford captured the regular-season match in Lancaster by a 3-1 count, rallying for three unanswered goals after spotting F&M an early 1-0 lead. It was the second straight win for the Fords vs. the Diplomats, who hold a 19-5-1 all-time advantage. Haverford's Mary Hobbs (10) is one of eight players in the Conference who has double figures in goals on the year. F&M's offense runs through Eileen O'Reilly who has 6-9-21 on the season.

Dickinson at Swarthmore (Women's Soccer)
The 2009 Centennial women's soccer tournament promises to be one of the most competitive in the country, as all five teams have at least 12 wins. The Red Devils (14-3) have only lost three matches this season - all at the hands of CC foes. The Garnet (13-4) also dropped three Conference matches, but defeated Dickinson, 1-0, back on Sept. 19 on a goal by Hannah Deming in the 17th minute. The Red Devils lead the Centennial in scoring offense, averaging 3.35 goals per game. First-year Hannah Richardson leads all Conference players with 13 goals. The Garnet has surrendered only 13 goals all season and GK Marie Mutryn is tied for second in the CC with seven shutouts. Dickinson leads the all-time series, 16-8-3, but Swat has won four of the last five meetings. The only loss in that stretch - last year's Conference semifinal (2-1).

Muhlenberg at Swarthmore (Volleyball)
The Mules (11-12) and the Garnet (18-9) square off in the Centennial playoffs for the first time tonight at Tarble Pavilion. Muhlenberg is back in the tournament after an eight-year absence, while Swarthmore returns after missing the tourney for the past three seasons. 'Berg's Phylicia Lee is ranked seventh in the CC in kills (2.72), while Swat's Genny Pezzola is tops in that category at 3.73 per set. The Garnet defeated the Mules in four sets back on Oct. 13, but Muhlenberg still holds a 13-6 series advantage since 1993.

It All Comes Down to This

It's the final weekend of regular-season action in the Conference for field hockey, soccer and volleyball, while cross country kicks off the Centennial championship season with its run on Saturday at Gettysburg. We'll take a look at the most important games ... and give you a little playoff primer to help you sort through the possibilities for who is in ... and who is out.

Cross Country
Can they do it again? That's the question for the Dickinson College men and the Johns Hopkins University women, who pulled off surprising victories at last season's Centennial Conference Championships at Gettysburg. Dickinson became the first team other than Haverford College to win the men's title since the inception of the conference in 1993 while Johns Hopkins snapped Dickinson's eight-year run as women's champions."

Field Hockey
Gettysburg at Muhlenberg; Haverford at McDaniel; Dickinson at Washington; Franklin & Marshall at Swarthmore.
What We Know: Ursinus is the top seed, Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins are in the field and the Blue Jays have a first-round bye. The winner of the Haverford-McDaniel game is in. Haverford must win to get in ... a loss and the Fords are out.
What We Don't Know: The identity of the fifth team. The Mules end the suspense with a win vs. Gettysburg tonight. A McDaniel loss leaves the Terror in the hunt along with Muhlenberg, Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson. Of the six scenarios involving teams with 5-5 records, F&M gets the berth in three, while Dickinson, McDaniel and Muhlenberg get in on one each.

Soccer (W)
Franklin & Marshall at Swarthmore; Washington at Dickinson; Johns Hopkins at Ursinus; Gettysburg at Muhlenberg.
What We Know: The five teams in the tournament - Johns Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Haverford, Swarthmore and Dickinson. The Jays, Mules and Fords have first-round byes. The Red Devils and Garnet meet in the first-round game.
What We Don't Know: Where are the games? Who is the top seed? A Muhlenberg victory gives the Mules the top seed and home field for the final four. A 'Berg loss and a Hopkins' win gives JHU the top seed. A three-way tie at 8-2 goes in favor of the Mules. If Dickinson and Swarthmore tie at 7-3 or 6-4, the Garnet is the 4th seed and hosts Wednesday's first-round match.

Soccer (M)
Ursinus at Muhlenberg; Johns Hopkins at Washington; Swarthmore at Haverford; Franklin & Marshall at Dickinson.
What We Know: The five teams in the tournament - Muhlenberg, Dickinson, Swarthmore, Johns Hopkins and Franklin & Marshall. Diplomats cannot be top seed. Yep, that's it.
What We Don't Know: What the seeds are ... who plays who ... and where? Five teams separated by three points (3 for a win, 1 for a tie), so let's see the possibilities -- Muhlenberg wins and is the #1 seed. Mules lose and Dickinson wins ... Devils are top seed. 'Berg and Dickinson lose, Swarthmore wins. Garnet takes #1 spot and gets home field for the final four. Mules, Devils, Garnet lose, Hopkins wins. Blue Jays are top seed. Many more scenarios ... not enough space.

Volleyball
Haverford at McDaniel; Gettysburg at Muhlenberg; Johns Hopkins at Ursinus
What We Know: Haverford is the top seed and will host the final four. Franklin & Marshall and Gettysburg have first-round byes and will meet in one semifinal. Swarthmore is the #4 seed and will host a first-round match on Wednesday.
What We Don't Know: Who plays Swarthmore as the #5 seed? McDaniel can secure the final spot with a win. Muhlenberg gets the slot with a win and a Green Terror loss. Johns Hopkins slides in with a win and losses by both 'Berg and McDaniel.

Five-Star Matchups

It's the penultimate game of the regular season in field hockey, men's soccer and volleyball. Playoff spots are on the line ... home field is up for grabs ... it doesn't get much better than this. Enjoy the games!

McDaniel at Johns Hopkins (Field Hockey)
The Green Terror (5-3, 7-8) and the Blue Jays (6-2, 11-4) meet in a game that has implications that will ripple throughout the Conference. McDaniel sits in fourth place, a game behind second-place Hopkins and Gettysburg. A Terror win puts the Green and Gold in position to lock up a first-round bye, while a loss throws the race for the final two playoff spots into a five-team chase. This is the 35th time that the two schools have met with JHU holding a 22-10-2 edge, including wins in the last four outings. McDaniel is 0-8 against Hopkins at Homewood since the inception of the Conference.

Muhlenberg at Swarthmore (Men's Soccer)
With all due respect to their season-ending opponents, this match could decide the top seed and home field advantage for next week's Centennial championship tournament. The Mules (6-1, 10-3-1) hold a two-point edge on the Garnet (5-1-1, 13-1-1) and Johns Hopkins and can lock up the #1 seed with wins tonight and Saturday against Ursinus. Swarthmore, who holds a tie-breaker advantage on the Blue Jays, could become the top seed with a victory tonight and a win against Haverford on Saturday. This is the 55th meeting on the pitch against the two teams with 'Berg holding a slim 28-24-2 lead. Each of the last two matches have ended 1-0 with the visiting team ending up on top.

McDaniel at Dickinson (Men's Soccer)
The Green Terror (3-3-1, 7-7-1) is in a must-win situation to keep its playoff hopes alive, while a Red Devil (5-2, 11-3-1) victory clinches a playoff berth. It promises to be a tight match, as the teams are tied at 8-8 since the inception of the Conference in 1993. Dickinson head coach Brian Redding has a 2-3 coaching record against his alma mater.

Swarthmore at Haverford (Volleyball)
This traditional rivalry reaches new heights tonight with playoff positioning on the line for both teams. The 25th ranked Fords (8-0, 26-3) need a victory to secure the #1 seed and home court for next week's Conference championship tournament. The Garnet (6-2, 18-7) looks to break a five-match losing streak to their arch-rivals and keep their hopes alive for a first-round bye. Swarthmore has not won at Haverford since 1993 - a streak of seven trips to the Main Line.

Five-Star Matchups

It's the last week of regular season play in the Conference and playoff positions are up for grabs.

Swarthmore at Haverford
Ursinus at Muhlenberg
Dickinson at Gettysburg
(Women's Soccer)

These three matches will go a long way to clearing up the playoff picture for next week's Conference championship tournament ... or maybe not? The Mules (7-1, 10-5) are two wins away from securing the top seed and home field for the tournament, but the Bears (4-3-1, 8-5-1) find themselves in a must-win situation. 'Berg leads the all-time series, 11-4, but Ursinus won the last meeting in Allentown in 2007. The Garnet (6-2, 12-3) and the Fords (6-2, 11-2-2) square off for the 26th time in their rivalry with a lot on the line. Both teams are tied for third place in the Conference and are still alive for the top seed ... or a bye in the first round. The last two games between the schools have ended in draws. The Red Devils (5-3, 12-3) find themselves alone in fifth place in the Conference but take on a Bullet squad (4-3-1, 9-5-1) that is a half-game back. Dickinson has not won at the Battlefield since 1988.

Dickinson at Gettysburg (Field Hockey)
This is the 41st time that the Red Devils (4-4 CC, 6-9) and the Bullets (5-2, 11-4) have played hockey since 1954 with Gettysburg winning four straight for a 28-10-2 lead. Dickinson is in a three-way tie for the fifth and final playoff spot with Haverford and Muhlenberg, while Franklin & Marshall is just a half-game back. The Bullets are still looking to secure a top-three spot to avoid the first-round game.

Five-Star Matchups

This is the next-to-last weekend of the regular season for field hockey, soccer and volleyball, while cross country prepares for next Saturday's Conference championship meet at Gettysburg. Games with playoff implications abound ... enjoy your Saturday ... and stay dry!

Dickinson at Haverford (Field Hockey)
McDaniel at Washington (Field Hockey)
It's a pair of contests that could be termed "elimination games." The Red Devils (3-4 CC, 5-9) and the Shorewomen (3-4, 6-8) might find themselves on the outside looking in come playoff time with a defeat. The Fords (4-3, 6-8) and the Green Terror (4-3, 6-8) realistically need two wins in their final three games to secure a spot in the five-team playoff field. Dickinson has won nine in a row vs. Haverford since a 1-0 win by the Fords in 1999. Washington has taken two straight from the Green Terror but trails in the all-time series, 9-7.

Johns Hopkins at Franklin & Marshall (Men's Soccer)
The Blue Jays (5-1, 12-2-1) travel to Lancaster to take on the Diplomats (4-2, 8-5-1) in a match that both teams need to solidify their playoff spots. Hopkins is in a three-way tie for first place and needs a victory to keep its top-seed and homefield advantage hopes alive. F&M is tied for fourth place and just a game in front of two teams for the final playoff slots. Three of the last four games between the teams have gone to OT, including last season's scoreless draw.

Dickinson at Haverford (Women's Soccer)
Swarthmore at Gettysburg (Women's Soccer)
There are six teams in the Conference with two or fewer Centennial losses and four of them square off Saturday. Only five make the tournament ... so this is a key weekend. The Red Devils (5-2, 12-2) and the Fords (5-2, 10-2-2) are tied for third place in the CC with the Garnet (5-2, 11-3). The Bullets (4-2-1, 9-4-1) are two points behind that trio in sixth position. This is the 25th meeting between Dickinson and Haverford and all but one match this decade has been decided by a goal or less. Swarthmore has not won at the Battlefield since 2002.

Swarthmore at Gettysburg (Volleyball)
It's time for the high-flying Garnet (6-1, 18-6) to measure itself against one of the perennial Centennial powers. Swarthmore has more wins than any season since the Centennial was formed in 1992, but has never beaten the 11-time CC champion Bullets (5-2, 16-7) in 27 tries. In fact, Swat has only won one set from Gettysburg since 1993. A win secures a playoff spot for the Garnet.

Five-Star Matchups

Just a week and a half remain in the Conference regular season in field hockey, soccer and volleyball ... so the chase for a playoff berth is on.

Gettysburg at McDaniel (Volleyball)
This is the 66th time that the Bullets (4-2, 15-7) and Green Terror (4-2, 15-9) have stood on opposite sides of the net with McDaniel holding a 41-24 series lead. The Green and Gold has won the last two meetings at the Gill Center in five-set thrillers. McDaniel looks to Taylor Herrgott (pictured), who is second in the Centennial in hitting percentage (.328) and third in kills (3.18). Gettysburg's Kristin Kotewicz is second in the CC in digs (4.89).

Gettysburg at McDaniel (Field Hockey)
The Bullets (4-2 CC, 10-3) and the Green Terror (4-2, 6-7) meet in their annual Route 97 battle. This is the 40th meeting between the long-time rival with Gettysburg holding a 28-6-5 advantage, including three straight wins in Westminster. McDaniel's last home win in the series came in 2002 (1-0). Along with Hopkins, these two teams have just two CC losses, while three others have three defeats. As just four playoff spots hang in the balance (conceding a berth to Ursinus), neither team can afford a loss today. Keep an eye on McDaniel's Mandy Pickard, who has eight goals on the season, and Gettysburg GK Christina Anderson, who leads the Centennial with six shutouts.

Ursinus at Swarthmore (Women's Soccer)
After one-loss Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg, there are five teams in the Conference with two CC losses, including the Bears (4-2-1, 8-4-1) and the Garnet (4-2, 10-3). With only five playoff spots available, a loss today could damage a team's tournament hopes. This is the 14th time that the schools have met on the pitch with UC holding a 9-4-1 advantage. Swarthmore has to mark Megan Ascanio (8) and Jess Porcelan (6) who have combined for 14 goals and turn to Marie Mutryn in net (0.69 GAA, 86.8 save pct).

Ursinus is 6-0 all-time against McDaniel and have won each of the last three contests by at least six goals. The Terror gave the Bears fits from 2003-05, dropping a pair of overtime contests and another game by a single goal. Ursinus has three players in double figures in goals - Alyssa Thren (19), Megan Yoder (14) and Jen Hooven (14). McDaniel's offense runs through Mandy Pickard (8) and Lindsay Riordan (7). Alyssa Thren, pictured

Franklin & Marshall at Swarthmore (Men's Soccer)

The sixth-ranked Garnet is led by F Morgan Langley who has a CC-best 12 goals and GK David D'Annunzio who has posted an 0.66 goals-against average. F&M looks to Matt Melino who has a team-high 4-5-13.

McDaniel at Muhlenberg (Men's Soccer) - postponed to Wednesday
It's time to find out what the Green Terror is made of, as McDaniel (3-2, 7-6) starts a difficult stretch at Muhlenberg (4-1, 8-3-1) and continues over the next two weeks against Swarthmore and Dickinson. Tim Wineke leads the Green and Gold with eight goals. Cody Antonini leads the Mules with 10 tallies. This is the 37th meeting on the pitch between the schools. Muhlenberg is 6-0-1 over the last seven matches and is 28-7-1 overall against the Terror.

Muhlenberg at Johns Hopkins (Women's Soccer)
It's a showdown between the top two teams in the Conference as the second-place Mules (4-1, 7-5) travel to the Charm City to take on the seventh-ranked Blue Jays (6-0, 11-2). It is the 21st meeting between the teams with Hopkins holding a 13-6-1 advantage, including seven straight victories. 'Berg's last triumph was in 2003 and the Mules have never defeated Hopkins in Baltimore (0-10). Erica Suter leads JHU with seven goals, while Meghan O'Grady tops Muhlenberg with six scores.

Johns Hopkins at Washington (Field Hockey)
The lone tilt on Friday night pits the Blue Jays (3-1 CC, 8-2) and the Shorewomen (3-1, 6-5) in a match that will have playoff implications. Hopkins leads the all-time series, 16-9, and has won three straight. Washington's last win in Chestertown was in 2004 (3-1). Keep an eye on the strikers - Dickinson's Thomas Parkinson (9-1-19) and JHU's Scott Bukoski (10-0-20).

Gettysburg at Johns Hopkins (Women's Soccer)
It's a big day at Homewood Field for soccer fans as the Bullets (2-1-1, 6-3-1) and the Blue Jays (4-0, 9-2) kick things off. The two teams have met 22 previous times with Gettysburg holding the slightest of leads, 11-10-1. Eighth-ranked Hopkins has won four straight since the Orange and Blue captured a 2-0 decision in Baltimore in 2005. These have been the two most successful programs in the Conference, combining to win 12 of the 16 Centennial titles. Erin Stafford leads the Jays in scoring (3-6-12). Bullet 'keeper Allie Rivera has an 0.69 goals-against average and has not surrendered a goal in over 300 minutes.

Dickinson at Swarthmore (Volleyball)

Muhlenberg is fresh off a victory against Haverford, snapping the Fords' 10-game regular-season unbeaten streak. The Mules lead the all-time series, 13-3-2, but the Devils are 1-0-1 in their last two trips to Varsity Field.

Gettysburg at Ursinus (Field Hockey)

Five-Star Matchups

As we close out the month of September, there are a number of big games on tap around the Conference. Here's a quick look.

Dickinson at Muhlenberg (Men's Soccer)
Two of the three Conference unbeatens square off in a critical match under the lights at Memorial Field in Allentown. The Red Devils (2-0, 7-1) are fresh off a 1-0 overtime win at #3 Swarthmore, while the Mules (2-0, 5-2) have won four straight, all on the road and by shutout. Dickinson is ranked second in the region and 10th nationally, while Muhlenberg holds down the No. 6 slot in the regional poll. Two players with a propensity for putting the ball in the net will be on display tonight in the Mules' Cody Antonini (8 goals) and the Devils' Thomas Parkinson (8 goals). Antonini has scored a goal in each of 'Berg's seven contests thus far in 2009. It is the 46th all-time meeting between the schools with Muhlenberg holding a 30-12-3 series advantage, despite four wins in the last five meetings by Dickinson.

Muhlenberg at Haverford (Field Hockey)
The race for the five playoff spots in the Conference looks to be wide-open, as the Mules (1-0 CC, 5-2) and the Fords (0-1, 3-3) look to take a step toward that goal today at Swan Field. Two of the Centennial's top goal scorers meet today in 'Berg's Tara Cohn (6) and Haverford's Alex Waleko (6). Muhlenberg leads the series, 11-5, since 1993 but the teams have split the last four contests.

Franklin & Marshall at Gettysburg (Volleyball)
It's one of the oldest volleyball series in the Conference ... and one of the best. Five-Star Matchups

It's Ladies Day in the Conference as the field hockey and women's soccer teams take center stage with key games.

Washington at Swarthmore (Field Hockey)
This is a game that could have a major impact on which team will be in the hunt for one of the five playoff spots in the Conference tournament. The Shorewomen (2-1 CC, 4-4) are riding a two-game win streak, defeating F&M in strokes and knocking off Mary Washington, as Kelsey Kemp (5-3-13) notched the game-clinching goals in both games. The Garnet (1-1, 4-4) gave eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins all it wanted last Saturday before falling 2-1 in overtime. Gina Grubb is near the top of the CC goalkeepers in save percentage (81.2). Washington leads the series, 9-8, since 1993.

Franklin & Marshall at Gettysburg (Field Hockey)
It's another match that could determine playoff fates as the Diplomats (1-1, 5-2) and the Bullets (1-1, 6-2) meet in the 43rd renewal of their rivalry. F&M has a 20-19-3 all-time lead and has won three of the last five games at the Battlefield. Allison McLaren (4-1-9) and Eileen O'Reilly (3-3-9) lead the Diplomat offense, while GK Christina Anderson (82.5 save pct.) backstops a stubborn Bullet defense.

Dickinson at Johns Hopkins (Women's Soccer)
It's a matchup between two nationally-ranked foes as the #21 Red Devils (1-1, 7-1) travel to Baltimore to battle the #9 Blue Jays (2-0, 7-2) in a rematch of the 2008 Centennial final. That match was scoreless through 110 minutes and was decided by penalty kicks (JHU 4-2). Dickinson has a prolific offense, led by Hannah Richardson (9-2-20) and Kim Callaghan (5-1-11), while GK Kailyn Hartmann has impressive save (91.3) and GAA (0.26) numbers. Johns Hopkins, the four-time defending CC champs, have depended on its defense through a challenging pre-season schedule. Karen Guszkowski is one of the top keepers in the Conference with a 90.6 save percentage and a 0.59 goals-against average.

Muhlenberg at Haverford (Women's Soccer)
There are some good storylines today on the Main Line as the Mules (1-0, 4-3) visit the Fords (1-0, 6-0-2). First, this is a match between two of the three unbeaten teams in the Conference. Second, it is a rematch of the 200 Centennial first-round match won by the Mules, 2-1. Third, Haverford head coach Jamie Gluck is a graduate of Muhlenberg '03 and played on a pair of CC championship squads (2001-02). 'Berg has a balanced scoring attack, led by Lauren Petri (3-3-9). Ford GK Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds has an 0.71 goals-against mark.

Five-Star Matchups

Here is a look at the weekend's top games in the Centennial Conference.

Johns Hopkins at Swarthmore (Women's Soccer)
Two of the top teams in the nation square off under the lights at Clothier Field in a match that could decide homefield for November's Conference tournament. The Blue Jays (6-2, 1-0), ranked #12 by the NSCAA and #14 by D3soccer.com, are four-time defending champions in the Conference. The Garnet (7-1, 1-0) are ranked #20 and #18, respectively, are 0-6 against Hopkins since a 2-1 overtime victory at home in 2003. The key matchup could be between Hopkins' All-America defender Jenn Paulucci and Swarthmore striker Julia Luongo (4-2-10).

Haverford at Gettysburg (Field Hockey)
The Fords (3-2, 1-0) travel west to the Battlefield to take on the 13th ranked Bullets (5-2, 0-1) in an early-season key matchup in the Conference. Gettysburg has won all 16 games in the series, including 13 by more than one goal. One of those one-goal games was last season on the Main Line (4-3). Alex Waleko and Roxanne Jaffe have combined for nine goals to lead the Fords, while Lexie Hearn, Nina Emala and Katie Savage each have three tallies for Gettysburg.

Swarthmore at Dickinson (Men's Soccer)
It's another big test for the undefeated Garnet as it travels to Carlisle to take on the nationally-ranked Red Devils in a rematch of the 2008 Centennial semifinal. Swarthmore (7-0, 1-0), ranked #3 by D3soccer.com and #9 by the NSCAA, is 5-0-3 against Dickinson since 2004. The Devils, ranked #18 and #12 respectively, have not won at Dickinson Park since 2002 (3-1). Swarthmore, led by GK David D'Annunzio, has allowed just one goal through seven games and has a scoreless streak of over 402 minutes. Dickinson looks to scorers Thomas Parkinson and Nicolas Tierno, the reigning Centennial offensive player of the week.

Haverford at Gettysburg (Volleyball)
It's become "THE" game of the season. A rematch of the 2008 Centennial final, the #21 Fords (13-2, 1-0) come a-callin' to Bream Gym to take on the Bullets (10-5, 1-0). Gettysburg holds a 20-6 all-time series lead, but Haverford has won five of the last six meetings, including a four-set victory for the Conference title last fall. The match may come down to the hitting of the Salvo sisters - Rebecca and Rachel - and the digging ability of the Bullets' Kristin Kotewicz.
