Playoff Primer

The “playoffs are what makes practice, lifting, Friday nights in, and early rising on Saturday worth it. It's payoff from three months of hard work. So it's not hard to get hyped up for.”

Dickinson junior volleyball player Amanda Hayes summed up the feelings of most Centennial athletes this weekend, as the "Final Fours" in field hockey, soccer and volleyball are held in Baltimore, Collegeville, Gettysburg and Swarthmore.

Here are some things to watch for this weekend.

Field Hockey at Ursinus
Semifinals: Ursinus vs. Washington; Johns Hopkins vs. Gettysburg.
Ursinus is averaging a CC-best 6.12 goals per game and has outscored its Centennial opposition, 79-7, this season ... Jennie Moore was named the CC Player of the Year after scoring 27 goals and handing out 15 assists for 67 points so far in 2008 ... Washington GK Elena Nicholoff was named first-team All-CC after posting an 86.0 save percentage ... the Shorewomen are winless in seven tries against UC ... Hopkins and Gettysburg are tied 14-14-1 in their all-time series after a 3-2 JHU victory on Sept. 19 ... the Jays are 6-1 all-time in CC semifinals, while the Bullets are 3-1 ... Hopkins' Emily Miller has scored 23 goals this season, while Gettysburg's Emily Harwood (14) and Savannah Ruth (13) have combined for 27 ... the Bullets are 4-for-4 on penalty strokes this season. Women's Soccer at Johns Hopkins
Semifinals: Johns Hopkins vs. Muhlenberg; Dickinson vs. Swarthmore.
Hopkins, who registered its first unbeaten regular season in school history
(15-0-3), is looking to become the first Centennial team to win four consecutive Conference championships ... there are five seniors that could become four-time champions with two wins in the tournament ... the Jays and the Mules have combined to win six Conference titles in 15 seasons ... Hopkins is 6-1 in CC semifinals and leads the all-time series with 'Berg, 12-6-1 ... JHU's Erica Suter shares the CC lead with 10 goals on the season ... Muhlenberg has never won in Baltimore (0-9) ... 'Berg rookie Nicolette Miller leads the CC with 24 points (9-6) ... Dickinson leads the all-time series with Swarthmore, 15-7-3, but has dropped the last three decisions by shutout to the Garnet ... Red Devil senior Sarah Casey, the 2008 Centennial Player of the Year, has 10 goals, including seven game-winners ... Garnet GK Lauren Walker was a first-team All-Centennial choice after posting an 0.57 goals against average and an 87.5 save percentage. Championship website

Men's Soccer at Swarthmore
Semifinals: Gettysburg vs. Johns Hopkins; Dickinson vs. Swarthmore.
Swarthmore will host the 2008 Centennial Conference men's soccer championship this weekend for the first time ... Gettysburg broke a nine-match winless streak against Johns Hopkins with a 3-1 win at Clark Field last week ... Hopkins leads the all-time series, 43-20-9, and is 1-1 with the Bullets in CC semifinal matches ... JHU is the two-time defending CC champs and defeated Gettysburg, 4-1, in last fall's final ... two players to watch are the Bullets' Chris Bayon and the Jays' Matt Carlson ... Bayon is second in the CC in scoring (7-4-18) while Carlson anchors a defense that has allowed only 12 goals this season ... Dickinson leads the all-time series against Swarthmore, 11-4-2, but the Devils have not scored a goal against Swat since 2003 (4-0) – a stretch of over 580 minutes ... the Garnet's Dylan Langley and Evan Nesterak each have six goals this season, while Morgan Langley shares the CC lead in assists (6) ... Dickinson is third in the CC with 34 goals, while Swarthmore is first in goals allowed (8). Championship website

Volleyball at Gettysburg
Semifinals: Franklin & Marshall vs. Gettysburg; Haverford vs. Johns Hopkins.
Gettysburg will host the 2008 Centennial Conference volleyball championship this weekend for the sixth time ... the Diplomats and Bullets have met in four Centennial championship matches, but never in the Conference semifinals ... Gettysburg holds a 33-11 all-time advantage ... there have been seven five-set matches in the history of the Centennial tournament and six have involved the Diplomats (2-4) ... Johns Hopkins and Haverford meet for the 23rd time in a series that began in 1987 ... the Blue Jays hold a 16-6 all-time lead, but the two-time defending champion Fords have won the last two meetings ... the Fords' Rebecca Salvo is third in the CC in kills (3.73) and fourth in hitting percentage (.287) ... Hopkins leads the CC in team hitting percentage (.229) ... Gettysburg is 7-0 all-time in Centennial finals, while Haverford is 2-0. Championship website
