Field Hockey Notebook - Sept. 6

The Conference went 5-6 on its opening weekend of the 2006 season with Gettysburg providing two of the victories over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foes Lynchburg (2-1) and Eastern Mennonite (3-1) ... Swarthmore posted an impressive overtime victory over Virginia Wesleyan, the preseason favorite to win the ODAC. Abigail Fischer (Sudbury, MA / Lincoln-Sudbury) redirected a Summer Spicer (Laurel, DE / Laurel) blast off a penalty corner just three minutes into the second half to knot the game at 1-1. The match remained knotted through regulation and overtime, setting up penalty strokes. Garnet GK Karen Lorang (San Diego, CA / University), who made eight saves on the night, turned away three Marlin shots while Swarthmore converted on three straight to prevail, 3-2 ... Johns Hopkins sophomore Emily Miller (Garden City, NY / Garden City) was named CC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring twice and handing out four assists in a 1-1 week. She had a goal and three helpers in the 5-4 loss to Cortland and had 1-1 in the 6-0 romp over Frostburg. Miller has already surpassed her point production from the 2005 season (2) with eight points ... Jillian Duffy (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) scored once in each half with assists from Lauren Rutt (Stevens, PA / Cocalico) as Muhlenberg blanked Moravian, 2-0 ... GAME TO WATCH: Ursinus looks to extend its Centennial regular-season win streak to 31 when it takes on Haverford on Wednesday.
